The Emergency Response Studio is currently under construction at Socrates Sculpture Park, in Long Island City, NY. The project re-purposes a dilapidated 30’ travel trailer, typical of the thousands of “FEMA trailers” sent to the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. Over the summer, it will be remade into a visually engaging, solar and wind-powered, mobile, artist’s studio. Designed for use in post-disaster or “emergency” settings, it will provide off-grid living and work space for displaced or visiting artists, enabling them to immerse themselves and respond creatively to unfolding events, in the tradition of “combat artists.” In November 2008, the Emergency Response Studio will travel to New Orleans as part of Prospect .1 New Orleans, a major, international, biennial exhibition. The project seeks to call attention to the ongoing emergency in New Orleans, to explore the artist’s role in re-envisioning post-disaster settings, and to promote the viability of sustainable, cleantech, temporary mobile housing. It is conceived as a symbol of transformation and possibility for the communities of the Gulf Coast.

The design work for the photovoltaic system has been completed by Ananda Hartzell at groSolar. Ananda provided CAD drawings from which they are constructing the battery box which will support 1300 lbs of batteries (to store the energy produced by the nine large solar panels). The battery box will be sunk into the floor and covered with a thick lucite panel so that the batteries will be visible. They are also preparing the roof of the trailer for the rack mounting system for the Evergreen Solar PV panels.
